Someone laughed, and stopped laughing when Dante turned his head. The room went still. Her pulse was loud in her ears, but she didn’t move. She had spent three weeks learning that moving was exactly what he expected.
He came around the table slowly, the way a storm takes its time. When he stopped behind her, she felt the warmth of him before anything else. His hand settled on the back of her chair. Not on her. Close enough that she could have leaned into it. She didn’t. Not yet.
“Leave us,” he said.
Chairs scraped. Doors closed. In ten seconds the room held only the two of them and the city lights behind the glass.
He bent down until his voice was only for her. “Do you know what they call me?”
“I know.”
“And you still sat here.”
“It’s a good chair.”
A breath against her temple that might have been a laugh. Then his fingers moved a strand of hair away from her neck, so carefully that it undid her more than any threat could have.
“Nobody sits here,” he murmured. “Except you. From now on, only you.”
